While working in construction in Phnom Penh in 2017, Theara was encouraged by a friend to begin training at a boxing club connected to Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture near Aeon Mall Phnom Penh.

In February 2023, Theara became the inaugural holder of an IPCC Kun Khmer World Championship belt after defeating a foreign opponent with a fourth-round elbow stoppage.

In July 2025, Theara defeated world-ranked Ugandan fighter Amar Semata by unanimous decision in a Golden Boy Kun Khmer title contest. Reports described Theara using speed, repeated attacks, hooks and knees to disrupt Semata’s rhythm.

Thoeun Theara’s defining international breakthrough came on December 24, 2022, at a Thai Fight event in Thailand. He faced experienced Thai star Saiyok Pumpanmuang for the Thai Fight Kard Chuek 72.5 kg championship and the King’s Trophy.

In November 2023, Theara entered an international eight-man tournament in the 72 kg division. Fighters from eight countries were placed into an elimination structure requiring three consecutive victories to win the championship.

On September 15, 2024, Thoeun Theara took part in a historic Kun Khmer event at the Ansan Olympic Memorial Hall in Ansan, South Korea. The Ganzberg Kun Khmer to the World Class programme was presented as the first major event of its kind to bring Cambodian fighters, officials and Kun Khmer rules directly to a South Korean audience.
